Dental X-Rays for Children
Dental X-rays for children, or as we like to call them “teeth pictures”, are an important tool we use to track the development and potential decay or diseases that can impact your child’s oral health. By taking dental x-rays we are able to assess areas of the teeth that cannot be seen during a regular dental cleaning & have a better understanding of the treatment options your child may need.
Here are the common types of “teeth pictures” we perform:
Bitewing X-rays: These are used by our dentists to assess growing molars, dental decay between teeth, and the jaw bone that holds teeth in place.
Periapical X-rays: These x-rays focus on the entire mouth and are recommended when a child’s first permanent molars come in, usually around the age of six. These x-rays are great when helping our dentists track the growth and development of a child’s teeth and oral structures such as the root, supporting jaw bone, as well as checking for extensive decay, gum disease, bone loss, or dental abscesses.
They’re Safe & Simple
The word x-ray can be a little intimidating at first, however our modern dental x-rays are administered in small doses and among the safest of all radiography. Your child will be given a lead apron to wear during the x-rays, protecting them from any stray radiation. Keeping your child safe is our job and we do it well.
For children with high risk of cavities, signs of plaque build-up, and other risk factors, The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends x-rays to be taken every 6 to 12 month. For children with low risk and healthy dental exams, our dentist may recommend to decrease the frequency.
Smile & Say Cheese!
Most insurances and childrens dental medicaid provide benefits for x-rays.
