So Close, Yet So Far
Nearsightedness
What’s that in the distance?
Nearsightedness, also known as Myopia, is a refractive disorder where it is challenging to see distant objects, but easy to see objects up close. Symptoms include:
- Blurred vision when looking at a distance
- Squinting
- Eye strain
- Eye fatigue when looking at objects more than a few feet away.
Not only does nearsightedness cause physical issues, but school performance and safety is impacted when it is not treated correctly. Nearsightedness is easily corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or eye surgery.
While young kids can still be affected, nearsightedness will start to show between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. Nearsightedness is important to monitor because it can quickly progress at uneven rates and will continue to progress throughout their teen years and remain unchanged into adulthood.
